I DID IT!!! Today I made it to a) the end of my novel, b) over 50,000 words in my word count for NaNoWriMo, and c) I finished NaNo and I won.
Was I planning on doing this today? NO! I was hoping, maybe, by noon on Wednesday. Based on where my word count was — and where my spirits were — yesterday, I was seriously doubting that I’d get further than 48,500 words by this afternoon.
But then last night something happened. I took a break, because a) White Fang wanted to use the computer, b) I could barely see straight anymore, and c) I realized that it was 5 p.m. and I was still in my pajamas. And while I took this “break,” and my mind kept spinning with those last minute questions — do I really have that plot reveal covered? does my character’s motivation in that part really make sense? how am I going to squeeze the rest of my outline in by Wednesday?!?! — something MASSIVE occurred to me.
I did not have to include all of my outline in this document. I’ve already decided (months ago) that this is the first in a series, and there will be 5 more books. And Volume 2, 4, and 5 especially are looking a bit thin in their current drafts. So why couldn’t I just push the last 7% of my outline further into the story, and complete Volume 1 now?
So that was what I did.
I also did it by a lot of hard work, constant shuffling of Muffin duty, and frequently refreshing my playlist to match the mood of the scene I was on.
Now I’m going to celebrate. The final editing can wait a little bit.
